March 29, 2026: Sunday Before Easter: -- Religion: The History Of Religion: Abrahamic Religions: Christianity: Lent (Latin: Quadragesima, "Fortieth"): Holy Week (Holy And Great Week, Passion Week): -- Holy Week (Koine Greek [Common Greek]: Hagia Kai Megale Hebdomas, "Holy And Great Week") is the week preceding Easter in the Christian year. Holy Week has five days of special significance, which start on Palm Sunday, the Sunday before Easter, until Holy Saturday (Black Saturday), but doesn't include Easter Sunday. Did you know? The day commemorating Jesus' crucifixion and death, Good Friday, has been celebrated since 100 A.D. as a day of fasting? This means that Christians around the world have celebrated Holy Week and observed different services during the week for over 1,900 years! Holy Week has names for the five special days in the week, beginning with Palm Sunday or Passion Sunday, which commemorates Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The following day is called Holy Monday when Jesus cursed the fig tree, sent out the merchants from the temple, and responded to those who questioned His authority. On Holy Tuesday, some observe Christ foretelling his own death. The next day is called Holy Wednesday or Spy Wednesday, which remembers how Judas arranged the betrayal of Jesus with the chief priests, since he was a spy among the disciples of Jesus. Some churches celebrate Tenebrae (the Latin for 'shadows' or 'darkness') services especially on Spy Wednesday, where they gradually extinguish lit candles while reciting and chanting a series of readings and selected psalms. Holy Wednesday is then followed by the 'Triduum' of Holy Week - Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. Deriving its name from a shortened form of the Latin word 'mandatum' meaning 'command,' Maundy Thursday (also called Holy Thursday) commemorates Christ's "new commandment" that his disciples love one another as He has loved them (John 13:34). Maundy Thursday also marks the Last Supper that Jesus shared with His disciples, His prediction of His death, His betrayal by Judas Iscariot, and His arrest at the Garden of Gethsemane. Maundy Thursday services also include an act of foot washing, commemorating how Jesus washed His disciples' feet as an act of service preceding His arrest. Known as the most somber day for Christians, Good Friday remembers Jesus' trial before Pontius Pilate, His death sentence, torture, crucifixion, death, and burial. Some Christians fast on Good Friday, while some avoid eating meat, and many attend a church service where they meditate on and venerate the cross of Christ. The Triduum of Holy Week concludes with Holy Saturday, the seventh day of the week, when Jesus rested in the tomb. On this day, Christians observe a late-night two-part Easter Vigil service. Jesus' resurrection on the eighth day, is celebrated as Easter, marking the beginning of the Easter week, and the season of Eastertide. March 29, 2026: Sunday Before Easter Sunday: -- Religion: The History Of Religion: Abrahamic Religions: Christianity: Lent (Latin: Quadragesima, "Fortieth"): Holy Week (Holy And Great Week, Passion Week): Palm Sunday: -- Palm Sunday celebrated, a Christian moveable feast commemorates Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem, an event mentioned in each of the four canonical Gospels. Palm Sunday marks the first day of Holy Week. For adherents of mainstream Christianity, it is the last week of the Christian solemn season of Lent that precedes the arrival of Eastertide. In most liturgical churches, Palm Sunday is celebrated by the blessing and distribution of palm branches (or the branches of other native trees), representing the palm branches which the crowd scattered in front of Christ as he rode into Jerusalem; these palms are sometimes woven into crosses. The difficulty of procuring palms in unfavorable climates led to their substitution with branches of native trees, including box, olive, willow, and yew. The Sunday was often named after these substitute trees, as in Yew Sunday, or by the general term Branch Sunday. In Syriac Christianity it is often called Oshana Sunday or Hosanna Sunday based on the biblical words uttered by the crowd while Jesus entered Jerusalem. Many churches of mainstream Christian denominations, including the Orthodox, Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist, Anglican, Moravian and Reformed traditions, distribute palm branches to their congregations during their Palm Sunday liturgies. Christians take these palms, which are often blessed by clergy, to their homes where they hang them alongside Christian art (especially crosses and crucifixes) or keep them in their Bibles and daily devotional books. In the period preceding the next year's Lent, known as Shrovetide, churches often place a basket in their narthex to collect these palms, which are then ritually burned on Shrove Tuesday to make the ashes to be used on the following day, Ash Wednesday, which is the first day of Lent. March 29: National Mom And Pop Business Owners Day: -- Our economy couldn't run without small mom and pop businesses. They create economic growth and provide almost 70% of all new jobs in the country. That's why every year on March 29 we acknowledge the more than 27 million small businesses in this country by celebrating National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day! From cozy bakeries to independent hardware stores, mom-and-pop businesses create a unique charm that larger chains simply can't replicate. Their personalized service and unique products offer a distinct shopping experience that fosters customer loyalty. Through their efforts, these small businesses contribute significantly to the local economy by generating jobs and keeping money circulating within the community. This day is also a chance to reflect on the meaningful impact these businesses have beyond just economics. Mom-and-pop shops often form the backbone of local charity work and community initiatives, helping to strengthen social ties and foster a sense of belonging. Their owners are often deeply involved in local events and causes, offering not just products but also a strong sense of connection and care. Supporting these small businesses doesn't just help individual owners -- it uplifts entire neighborhoods by reinforcing the local economy and preserving the distinct character of each community. The holiday was established by Rick and Margie Segel in honor of their parents and the successful hat shop they opened in 1939 and grew into a 10,000 square foot, 2M USD clothing shop. They wanted to recognize the hard work and commitment it takes to keep such businesses going. Over time, their small tribute evolved into a national celebration, honoring all mom-and-pop shops across the country. The day was created to remind people of the important role small businesses play in communities. These businesses provide more than just products or services -- they offer personal connections and unique experiences. Rick and Margie's decision to honor their parents' legacy led to widespread appreciation for all independent shop owners. Small businesses often face tough competition from large chains, making this day even more significant. Celebrating their contributions helps bring attention to the value these businesses bring to the local economy. They provide jobs, contribute to the community's character, and keep money circulating locally. Today, many people use this occasion to support local shops through purchases or by sharing their stories. It's a chance to reflect on how these businesses shape neighborhoods, offering something special you can't find in big corporations.National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day now stands as a proud reminder of how small businesses enrich daily life. March 29, 1780: The Age Of Enlightenment (The Enlightenment, The Age Of Reason): The Age Of Revolution: The Atlantic Revolutions: The American Enlightenment: The American Revolution: The American Revolutionary War: The Siege Of Charleston: -- The Siege Of Charleston begins, a major engagement and major British victory fought between March 29 to May 12, 1780 during the American Revolutionary War, which resulted in the largest defeat of the Continental Army when the city of Charleston, South Carolina was taken by British forces on May 12, 1780. The British, following the collapse of their northern strategy in late 1777 and their withdrawal from Philadelphia in 1778, shifted their focus to the American Southern Colonies. After approximately six weeks of siege, Major General Benjamin Lincoln, commanding the Charleston garrison, surrendered his forces to the British. British General Sir Henry Clinton, after cutting Charleston off from relief, began the siege on April 1, 1780 (April Fool's Day), 800 yards from the American fortifications located at today's Marion Square. Continental Navy commander Abraham Whipple, deciding the shoal of Charleston's harbor was indefensible, scuttled his fleet at the mouth of the Cooper River. A week later, British Admiral Mariot Arbuthnot brought his 14 vessels safely into the harbor on April 8, past the roaring guns of Fort Moultrie, the same day Continental Army General William Woodford arrived with 750 Virginia Regiment soldiers. In order to consolidate British control of the immediate area, Clinton dispatched British commander 1st Baronet Sir Banastre Tarleton and Scottish Officer Patrick Ferguson (designer of the Ferguson rifle, one of the first breech-loading rifles to be put into service by the British military) to lead the British Legion, a provincial regiment composed of Loyalist infantry and dragoons known as Tarleton's Raiders, to capture Monck's Corner on April 14. On April 18, British Lt. Col. Lord Rawdon (Francis Rawdon-Hastings, 1st Marquess of Hastings) arrived with 2,500 men, including the 42nd Highlanders, the Hessian Von Ditfurth Regiment, the Queen's Rangers, Prince Of Wales American Volunteers, and the Volunteers of Ireland. Thereby, Charleston was completely surrounded by the British. Governor John Rutledge escaped on April 13, before British General Charles Cornwallis, 1st Marquess Cornwallis, crossed the Cooper River and joined Lt. Col. James Webster in blocking escape from the left bank. On April 21, Continental leader Benjamin Lincoln requested a surrender with "honours of war", which was rejected by Clinton (The Honours Of War are a set of privileges that are granted to a defeated army during the surrender ceremony, symbolizing the valour of the defeated army, which became a custom during the age of early modern warfare, typically permitting a surrendering garrison to march out with drums beating and flags flying, after which they would become prisoners of war or granted free passage.). On April 25, civilians led by Lieutenant Governor Christopher Gadsden prevented any action on Lincoln's part in withdrawing the Continental regiments. On May 6, Tarleton won another engagement in the Battle of Lenud's Ferry, while the British siege works had advanced far enough towards the Charleston fortifications to drain the canal in front. On May 7, Fort Moultrie surrendered without a fight. On May 8, Clinton called for Lincoln's unconditional surrender, but Lincoln attempted to negotiate for the honours of war. On May 11, Gadsden and other citizens asked Lincoln to surrender. On the same day, the British fired heated shot into the city, burning several homes, and Lincoln felt forced to call for a parlay to negotiate terms for surrender. On May 12, Lincoln formally surrendered 3,371 men to the British. When word reached the backcountry, the American troops holding the Camden district and the town of Ninety-Six, South Carolina also surrendered to the British. March 29, 1790: #BOTD: #HBD! John Tyler, the 10th U.S. President (d. January 18, 1862) is #born in Charles City County, Virginia. He served from 1841 to 1845 after briefly being the tenth Vice President (1841); he was elected to the latter office on the 1840 Whig ticket with President William Henry Harrison. Tyler ascended to the presidency after Harrison's death in April 1841, only a month after the start of the new administration. He was a supporter of states' rights, and as president he adopted nationalist policies only when they did not infringe on the powers of the states. His unexpected rise to the presidency, with the resulting threat to the presidential ambitions of Henry Clay and other politicians, left him estranged from both major political parties. In the 1820s the nation's only political party, the Democratic-Republicans, split into factions. He was initially a Democrat, but opposed Andrew Jackson during the Nullification Crisis, seeing his actions as infringing upon states' rights, and criticized his expansion of executive power during the Bank War. This led him to ally with the Whig Party. He was put on the 1840 presidential ticket to attract states' rights Southerners to a Whig coalition to defeat Martin Van Buren's re-election bid. With the death of President Harrison, Tyler became the first vice president to succeed to the presidency without election. After Harrison's one-month term, Tyler served longer than any president in U.S. history not elected to the office. To forestall constitutional uncertainty, Tyler immediately took the oath of office, moved into the White House, and assumed full presidential powers, a precedent that governed future successions and was codified in the Twenty-fifth Amendment. A strict constructionist, Tyler found much of the Whig platform unconstitutional, and vetoed several of his party's bills. Believing that the president should set policy rather than Congress, he sought to bypass the Whig establishment, most notably Kentucky Senator Henry Clay. Most of Tyler's Cabinet resigned soon into his term, and the Whigs, dubbing him His Accidency, expelled him from the party. Tyler was the first president to see his veto of legislation overridden by Congress. The Republic of Texas separated from Mexico in 1836; Tyler, a firm believer in manifest destiny, saw its annexation as providing an economic advantage to the United States, and worked diligently to make it happen. He initially sought election to a full term as president, but after failing to gain the support of either Whigs or Democrats, he withdrew in support of Democrat James K. Polk, who favored annexation. Polk won the election, and Tyler signed a bill to annex Texas three days before leaving office. Under Polk, the process was completed. After the American Civil War began in 1861, Tyler won election to the Confederate House of Representatives, but died before being seated of a stroke in his room at the Ballard House Hotel in Richmond, Virginia before the first session could open in February 1862. He is buried at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond. Although some have praised Tyler's political resolve, his presidency is generally held in low regard by historians. He is considered an obscure president, with little presence in American cultural memory. March 29, 1847: The Mexican-American War (The Mexican War): The Siege Of Veracruz (The Battle Of Veracruz): -- United States forces led by General Winfield Scott win the Battle Of Veracruz, a 20-day siege of the key Mexican beachhead seaport, ending with the surrender and occupation of the city, after which U.S. forces marched inland to Mexico City. The Siege Of Veracruz, also known as the Battle Of Veracruz, began on March 9, 1847 when the United States Marine Corp launched the first large-scale amphibious assault in U.S. history. The commander of the operation, Major General Winfield Scott, agreed with Commodore David Conner's suggestion for a landing site at Collado Beach, 3 mi (4.8 km) south of Veracruz. The 1st Regular Division under General William J. Worth was chosen to make the landing first, followed by General Robert Patterson's volunteers and then General David E. Twiggs' regular division. Conner's Mosquito Fleet, a United States Navy squadron detachment of small gunboats, moved to within 90 yd (82 m) of the beach to supply covering fire if necessary. By 12:15 pm this force was off Collado Beach, followed by larger vessels over the next three hours and a signal for landing the surfboats at 5:30 pm. Just before the main force touched the beach, General Worth's gig (a boat used on naval ships as the captain's taxi) dashed ahead, and he and his staff jumped ashore. Worth's whole division landed without firing or receiving a single shot. By 11 pm, Scott's entire army had been brought ashore without a single man lost, and the first large scale amphibious landing conducted by the U.S. military was a success. The Battle of Veracruz was a 20-day siege of the key Mexican beachhead seaport of Veracruz, during the Mexican-American War. March 11, 1955) is #born Oscar Ferdinand Mayer in Kosingen (now part of Neresheim), in the Kingdom of Wurttemberg, where his family had been foresters and ministers for generations. While he was a child, Wurttemberg became part of the German Empire. In 1873 he emigrated to the United States and lived in Detroit with his cousin, John Schroll. He worked in that city's meat market and in 1876 moved to Chicago with the Schrolls. Mayer found work at Armour & Company in Chicago's North Side. In 1880, he shared his idea of starting how own meat business with his younger brother, Gottfried, who was back in Germany. He asked Gottfried to begin studying sausage making process. Meanwhile, Oscar began saving money for the venture. Three years later, he started a butcher and sausage-making shop of his own, when he was 24 years old with his brothers - Gottfried and Max. Five years later, the proprietor who owned the store refused to renew Mayer's lease, hoping that he could profit from Mayer's business success. Pushed out on his own, Mayer bought a property and constructed a two-story building for his business and family. In 1887 he married Louise Greiner, originally from Munich, and their only son, Oscar G. Mayer Sr. was born in that building. With the company's continued growth, it became a sponsor of such events as polka bands and the German exhibition at the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893. The company had grown to 43 employees in 1900, offering meat delivered across the city of Chicago and its suburbs. Capitalizing on an industry trend, in 1904 the company started using its own brands for its meat products and was one of the earliest participants in the Food Safety and Inspection Service, created under the Federal Meat Inspection Act of 1906, to verify the contents of its products. By the time of his death, the business named after himself had grown to 9,000 employees, with facilities in Davenport, Iowa; Los Angeles; Madison, Wisconsin; and Philadelphia. In 1912, Mayer founded the Lincoln Park Gun Club with Philip K. Wrigley, Sewell Avery, and other prominent Chicagoans. After being ill for six weeks, Oscar Mayer died in his sleep 2 weeks before his 96th birthday at his home on 5727 North Sheridan Road in Chicago, Illinois with his son and successor Oscar G. Mayer Sr. and his three daughters at his bedside. He is buried at Rosehill Cemetery And Mausoleum in Chicago, Illinois. His wife died in 1931. March 29, 1871: Grand Openings: Theatre Grand Openings: -- The Royal Albert Hall, a concert hall on the northern edge of South Kensington, London, which has held the Proms concerts annually each summer since 1941, is opened by Queen Victoria. The Royal Albert Hall has a capacity of up to 5,272 seats. The Hall is a registered charity held in trust for the nation and receives no public or government funding. Besides being a favorite venue for performers of all kinds from classical music to rock, it is mentioned frequently in British song. In the Beatles song "A Day in the Life", it is mentioned in "now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall"; in "Session Man" by The Kinks, it's referenced by "He never will forget at all | The day he played at Albert Hall."; and in the song "Shame" by Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow, Barlow mentions the Hall in his verse "I read your mind and tried to call, my tears could fill the Albert Hall."' Of perticular note is some variants of the August 1939 novelty song, "Hitler Has Only Got One Ball", a song sung to the tune of the "Colonel Bogey March", which many Americans are familiar with as the opening theme of the movie "The Bridge on the River Kwai". It pokes fun at Adolf Hitler's supposedly having only one (descended) testicle, and derides him for not having "balls"; his second testicle is mentioned to be in the Albert Hall: "Hitler has only got one ball | The other is in the Albert Hall | His mother, the dirty bugger | Cut it off when he was small". March 29, 1899: #BOTD: Lavrentiy Beria, Georgian-Russian general and Soviet politician, Russian Minister of Internal Affairs, Marshal of the Soviet Union, chief of the Soviet security and secret police apparatus (NKVD) during World War II, Deputy Premier and Politburo (d. December 23, 1953) is #born Lavrentiy Pavlovich Beria in Merkheuli, near Sukhumi, in the Sukhum Okrug of the Kutais Governorate (now Gulripshi District, de facto Republic of Abkhazia, or Georgia, then part of the Russian Empire). Lavrentiy Beria was the longest-lived and most influential of Stalin's secret police chiefs, wielding his most substantial influence during and after World War II. Following the Soviet Invasion Of Poland in 1939 he was responsible for organising the Katyn massacre. He simultaneously administered vast sections of the Soviet state and acted as the de facto Marshal of the Soviet Union in command of NKVD field units responsible for barrier troops and Soviet partisan intelligence and sabotage operations on the Eastern Front during World War II. Beria administered the vast expansion of the Gulag labour camps and was primarily responsible for overseeing the secret detention facilities for scientists and engineers known as sharashkas. He attended the Yalta Conference with Stalin, who introduced him to U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt as "our Himmler". After the war, he organised the Communist takeover of the state institutions in Central Europe and Eastern Europe and political repressions in these countries. Beria's uncompromising ruthlessness in his duties and skill at producing results culminated in his success in overseeing the Soviet atomic bomb project. Stalin gave it absolute priority and the project was completed in under five years. After Stalin's death in March 1953, Lavrentiy Beria became First Deputy Premier of the Soviet Union and head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. In this dual capacity, he formed a troika alongside Georgy Malenkov and Vyacheslav Molotov that briefly led the country in Stalin's place. A coup d'etat by Nikita Khrushchev with help from Marshal of the Soviet Union Georgy Zhukov in June 1953 removed Beria from power. He was arrested on charges of 357 counts of rape and treason. He was sentenced to death and he died in Moscow aged 54 when he was executed by a gunshot through the forehead by General Pavel Batitsky, who had to stuff a rag into Beria's mouth to silence him. Beria's final moments bore great similarity to those of his own predecessor, NKVD Chief Nikolai Yezhov, who begged for his life before his execution in 1940. Beria's body was subsequently cremated and the remains buried in a forest near Moscow. August 24, 1979) is #born in Hirschberg, Silesia. Hanna Reitsch set more than 40 flight altitude records and women's endurance records in gliding and unpowered flight, before and after World War II. In the 1960s, she was sponsored by the West German foreign office as a technical adviser in Ghana and elsewhere, and founded a gliding school in Ghana, where she worked for Kwame Nkrumah, the authoritarian rule of Ghana. Hanna Reitsch died of a heart attack in Frankfurt, Germany at the age of 67. She had never married. She is buried in the Reitsch family grave in the Salzburger Kommunalfriedhof in Salzburg, Austria. Former British test pilot and Royal Navy officer Eric Brown said he received a letter from Reitsch in early August 1979 in which she said, "It began in the bunker, there it shall end." Within weeks she was dead. Brown speculated that Reitsch had taken the cyanide capsule Hitler had given her in the bunker all those years before, and that she had taken it to make good on the decades-old suicide pact with she had made with her partner, her flying colleague and last head of the Luftwaffe, Generalfeldmarschall Robert Ritter von Greim. March 29, 1916: #BOTD: #HBD! Eugene McCarthy, American soldier, code breaker, politician and poet from Minnesota (d. December 10, 2005) is #born Eugene Joseph McCarthy in Watkins, Minnesota. He served in the United States House Of Representatives from 1949 to 1959 and the United States Senate from 1959 to 1971. McCarthy sought the Democratic nomination in the 1968 presidential election, challenging incumbent Lyndon B. Johnson on an anti-Vietnam War platform. McCarthy sought the presidency five times, but never won. Born in Watkins, Minnesota, McCarthy became an economics professor after earning a graduate degree from the University of Minnesota. He served as a code breaker for the United States Department of War during World War II. McCarthy became a member of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (the state affiliate of the Democratic Party) and in 1948 was elected to the House of Representatives, where he served until being elected to the Senate in 1958. McCarthy was a prominent supporter of Adlai Stevenson II for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1960 and was himself a candidate for the Democratic vice-presidential nomination in 1964. He co-sponsored the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, though he later expressed regret about its impact and became a member of the Federation for American Immigration Reform. As the 1960s progressed, McCarthy emerged as a prominent opponent of Johnson's handling of the Vietnam War. After Robert F. Kennedy declined the request of a group of antiwar Democrats to challenge Johnson in the 1968 Democratic primaries, McCarthy entered the race on an antiwar platform. Though he was initially given little chance of winning, the Tet Offensive galvanized opposition to the war and McCarthy finished in a strong second place in the New Hampshire primary. After that, Kennedy entered the race and Johnson announced that he would not seek reelection. McCarthy and Kennedy each won several primaries before Kennedy was assassinated in June 1968. The 1968 Democratic National Convention nominated Vice President Hubert Humphrey, Johnson's preferred candidate. McCarthy did not seek reelection in the 1970 Senate election. He sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 1972 but fared poorly in the primaries. He ran in several more races after that, but was never elected to another office. He ran as independent in the 1976 presidential election and won 0.9% of the popular vote. He was a plaintiff in the landmark campaign finance case Buckley v. March 29, 1928: #BOTD: Vincent Gigante, also known as "The Chin", "The Oddfather", "The Enigma In The Bathrobe", "The Robe", "The Real Boss Of New York", and Vinny Gigante, American boxer and mobster, crime boss Genovese crime family in New York City from 1981 to 2005 (d. December 19, 2005) is #born Vincent Louis Gigante in New York City to Italian immigrants from Naples. Gigante started out as a professional boxer who fought in 25 matches between 1944 and 1947. He then started working as a Mafia enforcer for what was then the Luciano crime family, forerunner of the Genovese family. Gigante was one of five brothers; three of them, Mario, Pasquale, and Ralph, followed him into the Mafia. Only one brother, Louis, stayed out of the crime family, instead becoming a priest. Gigante was the shooter in the failed assassination of longtime Luciano boss Frank Costello in 1957. In 1959, he was sentenced to seven years in prison for drug trafficking, and after sharing a prison cell with Costello's rival, Vito Genovese, Gigante became a caporegime overseeing his own crew of Genovese soldiers and associates who operated out of Greenwich Village. Gigante quickly rose to power during the 1960s and 1970s. By 1981 he became the family's boss, while Anthony "Fat Tony" Salerno served as front boss during the first half of the 1980s. He also ordered the failed murder attempt of Gambino crime family boss John Gotti in 1986. With the arrest and conviction of Gotti and various Gambino family members in 1992, Gigante was recognized as the most powerful crime boss in the United States. For about 30 years, Gigante feigned insanity in an effort to throw law enforcement off his trail. Dubbed "The Oddfather" and "The Enigma in the Bathrobe" by the media, Gigante often wandered the streets of Greenwich Village in his bathrobe and slippers, mumbling incoherently to himself. He was indicted on federal racketeering charges in 1990, but was determined to be mentally unfit to stand trial. In 1997, he was tried and convicted of racketeering and conspiracy, and sentenced to 12 years in prison. Facing obstruction of justice charges in 2003, he pleaded guilty and admitted that his supposed insanity was an elaborate effort to avoid prosecution, as he was sentenced to an additional three years in prison. Vincent Gigante died while incarcerated at the United States Medical Center For Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Missouri, aged_77. His funeral and burial were held four days later, on December 23, at Saint Anthony of Padua Church in Greenwich Village, largely in anonymity. Since Gigante's death, his family has continued to live well. According to a 2011 report by Jerry Capeci, Gigante's relatives earn nearly 2M USD a year as employees of companies on the New Jersey waterfront. March 29, 1936: The Interwar Period (The Interbellum, Between The Wars): The Road To War: Nazi Germany (The German Reich, The Third Reich): The Remilitarization Of The Rhineland (German: Rheinlandbesetzung): Elections In Nazi Germany: The 1936 German Parliamentary Election And Referendum: -- Adolf Hitler receives 99% of the votes in parliamentary elections in the form of a single-question referendum, asking voters whether they approved of the illegal military occupation of the Rhineland and a single party list for the new Reichstag composed exclusively of Nazis and nominally independent 'guests' of the party. Like previous elections in Nazi Germany, it was characterized by high turnout (officially 99.0%, receiving 44.5 million votes out of 45.5 million registered voters) and a massively lopsided result. In a publicity stunt, a handful of voters were packed aboard the airships Graf Zeppelin and Hindenburg, which flew above the Rhineland as those aboard cast their ballots. This was the first German election held after enactment of the Nuremberg Laws, which had removed citizenship rights (including the right to vote) from Jews and other ethnic minorities. In the previous elections and referenda under Nazi rule, Jews, Poles and other ethnic minorities had been allowed to vote without much interference, and even tacitly encouraged to vote against the Nazis (especially in districts that were known to have large populations of ethnic minorites). Their removal from the electoral process accounted for much of the large drop in invalid and negative votes, which fell from over five million in 1934 to barely half a million in 1936. The Nazis also lowered the voting age, in large part so as to ensure that the electorate was about the same size as in 1934. The new Reichstag convened for formulary procedures on 30 January 1937 to re-elect its Presidium and Hermann Goering as President of the Reichstag. During World War II, the city of Lubeck was the first German city to be attacked in substantial numbers by the Royal Air Force. The attack on the night of March 28 ,1942 created a firestorm that caused severe damage to the historic centre, with bombs destroying three of the main churches and large parts of the built-up area. It led to the retaliatory "Baedeker" raids on historic British cities. Although a port, and home to several shipyards, including the Lubecker Flender-Werke, Lubeck was also a cultural centre and only lightly defended. The bombing followed the Area Bombing Directive issued to the RAF on February 14, 1942 which authorised the targeting of civilian areas. Eric Idle, English actor, comedian, author, and musician, is #born in Harton Hospital, in South Shields, County Durham, North East England, to which his mother had been evacuated from northwest England. His mother, Norah Barron Sanderson, was a health visitor and his father, Ernest Idle, served in the Royal Air Force during World War II, only to be killed in a road accident while hitchhiking home for Christmas in December 1945. Eric Idle is a former member of the British surreal comedy group Monty Python, a member of the parody rock band The Rutles, and the writer, for the music and lyrics, of the Broadway musical Spamalot (based on Monty Python and the Holy Grail). Known for his elaborate wordplay and musical numbers, Idle performed many of Python's songs, including "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" (from Life of Brian), and the "Galaxy Song" (from The Meaning of Life). After Monty Python's Flying Circus, he hosted Saturday Night Live in the US four times in the first five seasons. Idle's initially successful solo career faltered in the 1990s with the failures of his 1993 film Splitting Heirs (written, produced by, and starring him) and 1998's An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn (in which he starred). He revived his career by returning to the source of his worldwide fame, adapting Monty Python material for other media. Following the success of the musical Spamalot (which won the Tony Award for Best Musical), he also wrote Not the Messiah, an oratorio derived from the Life of Brian. He featured in a one-hour symphony of British Music when he performed to a global audience at the London 2012 Olympic Games closing ceremony. March 29, 1945: The European Civil War: World War II: The Second European War (The European Theater Of World War II): The Eastern Front Of World War II: The Great Patriotic War (The German-Soviet War): The East Prussian Offensive: The Braunsberg Offensive: The Heiligenbeil Pocket (The Heiligenbeil Cauldron) (German: Kessel Con Heiligenbeil): -- The German 4th Army is almost destroyed in a major encirclement battle by the Soviet Red Army in the Heiligenbeil Pocket, on the Eastern Front near Heiligenbeil in East Prussia in eastern Germany (now Mamonovo, Kaliningrad Oblast), in preparation for the final assault on Konigsberg, The Battle Of Konigsberg (The Konigsberg Offensive. The Heiligenbeil Pocket was fought during the closing weeks of World War II during the Soviet Braunsberg Offensive Operation (March 13-22, 1945), was part of a broader Soviet offensive into the region of East Prussia, lasting from January 26 until March 29, 1945, when the pocket was finally crushed. The Red Army quickly moved to cut communication between the Kessel and Konigsberg, their troops reaching the coastline about 5 miles from the city on March 15. A crossing of the Frisching River was forced in a night attack on the night of March 17-18, further rolling up German defences of the Kessel from the east. Clearer weather from 18 March allowed an intensive aerial bombardment of the Fourth Army's positions. With most communications cut, German forces remaining in the pocket were now faced with either death or being taken prisoner. Some 'elite' units, such as the Fallschirm-Panzergrenadier Division 2 Hermann Goring and the 24th Panzer Division, were evacuated by sea, but others were gradually cut off in a series of small pockets on the coast, in some cases actually digging into the coastal embankments or beaches. POW reports suggested that many German units were now seriously understrength, with the 50th Infantry Division, for example, able to field only a single incomplete regiment. The Soviets finally took Braunsberg on March 20. Heiligenbeil, covering the small port of Rosenberg, was attacked with phosphorus bombs on March 22 and successfully stormed on March 25, the town suffering almost complete destruction. Rosenberg itself was taken on 26 March, with the remnants of the Fourth Army falling back on the Kahlholzer Haken peninsula, where the perimeter was defended by troops from the Panzerkorps "Grossdeutschland" and the 28th Jager Division. The last evacuations took place on the morning of March 29 from Kahlholz and Balga, where a remnant of the 562nd Volksgrenadier Division was destroyed forming a rearguard (its commander, Helmuth Hufenbach, receiving a posthumous promotion to Major-General). Soviet sources claimed 93,000 enemy dead and 46,448 taken prisoner during the operation; German sources claim that many troops in the Kessel were successfully evacuated to the Frische Nehrung. Given the chaos prevailing at this stage of the war, it is unlikely that accurate figures will ever be determined, many soldiers having simply disappeared. Further elements of the Fourth Army continued to resist around Pillau, and latterly on the Frische Nehrung, until May.The 4th Army's archives were buried in a forest near the town of Heiligenbeil (now known as Mamonovo, Russia), in an area still littered with debris from the final battles. The V-1 Flying Bomb was the first of the Vergeltungswaffen (V-weapons) deployed for the terror bombing of London. It was developed at Peenemunde Army Research Center in 1939 by the Luftwaffe at the beginning of the Second World War, and during initial development was known by the codename "Cherry Stone". Due to its limited range, the thousands of V-1 missiles launched into England were fired from launch facilities along the French (Pas-de-Calais) and Dutch coasts or by modified He 111 aircraft. The Wehrmacht first launched the V-1s against London on 13 June 1944, one week after (and prompted by) the successful Allied landings in France. At peak, more than one hundred V-1s a day were fired at southeast England, 9,521 in total, decreasing in number as sites were overrun until October 1944, when the last V-1 site in range of Britain was overrun by Allied forces. After this, the Germans directed V-1s at the port of Antwerp and at other targets in Belgium, launching a further 2,448 V-1s. As part of operations against the V-1, the British operated an arrangement of air defences, including anti-aircraft guns, barrage balloons, and fighter aircraft, to intercept the bombs before they reached their targets, while the launch sites and underground storage depots became targets for Allied attacks including strategic bombing. In 1944, a number of tests of this weapon were apparently conducted in Tornio, Finland. On one occasion, several Finnish soldiers saw a German plane launch what they described as a bomb shaped like a small, winged aircraft. The flight and impact of another prototype was seen by Finnish frontline soldiers; they noted that its engine stopped suddenly, causing the V-1 to descend sharply, and explode on impact, leaving a crater 20-30 metres (66-98 ft) wide. Tritia Toyota, Japanese American former Los Angeles television news anchor, author, a current adjunct assistant professor in anthropology, Asian American studies and the media at the University of California at Los Angeles, and beauty, is #born in Portland, Oregon. She earned a master's degree in journalism from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1970, and later earned a PhD in anthropology. Toyota began her broadcast career in Los Angeles in 1970 as a radio reporter with KNX-AM. In January 1972 she was hired as a general assignment reporter at KNBC-TV; she became weekend anchor there in 1975, and was promoted to the 5 p.m. edition of NewsCenter 4 in 1977 followed by the 11 p.m. newscast in 1978. Toyota quit KNBC (which became News 4 L.A. at the time of her resignation) in March 1985 and, after a standard three-month period between contracts, signed on as a news anchor for Channel 2 News at KCBS-TV, where she was reunited with many of her fellow KNBC alumni (Jess Marlow, John Schubeck and Kevin O'Connell). Initially anchoring at 6 and 11 p.m., by the early to mid 1990s Toyota was relegated to the morning and midday editions of Channel 2 Action News. On November 17, 1999, the Los Angeles Times reported that Toyota had left KCBS and that she previously had been removed from early morning and noon newscasts in September and October 1999. The story also reported that Toyota had been offered an opportunity to continue at the station and that she had declined. In 1981, Toyota, along with reporters Bill Sing, Nancy Yoshihara, David Kishiyama, Frank Kwan, and Dwight Chuman, founded the Asian American Journalists Association. Toyota is currently an adjunct professor in the Department of Asian American Studies at UCLA. In 2009 she published a book "Envisioning America: New Chinese Americans and the Politics of Belonging". Toyota is married to Michael Yamaki and lives in the Los Angeles area. Los Angeles punk rock band The Dickies recorded a song called "(I'm Stuck in a Pagoda with) Tricia Toyota." It is unclear whether the misspelling of Toyota's first name was deliberate or accidental. Toyota is also mentioned in "The L.A. Song," a song by L.A. hip-hop group People Under The Stairs, from their 2002 album O.S.T.. The TV news reporter character Tricia Takanawa on Family Guy may have been inspired at least in part by Toyota; KTTV Fox 11 reporter Tricia Takasugi has also been suggested as a source for the character. March 29, 1949: #BOTD: #HBD! Vangelis, Greek keyboard player, composer, songwriter and arranger of electronic, progressive, ambient, and classical orchestral music (d. May 17, 2022) is #born Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou in Agria, Greece, a coastal town in Magnesia, Thessaly. He was best known for his Academy Award-winning score to Chariots of Fire (1981), as well as for composing scores to the films Blade Runner (1982), Missing (1982), Antarctica (1983), The Bounty (1984), 1492: Conquest of Paradise (1992), and Alexander (2004), and for the use of his music in both the 1989 French documentary series From Nuremberg To Nuremberg, and the 1980 PBS documentary series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage by Carl Sagan. Born in Agria and raised in Athens, Vangelis began his career in the 1960s as a member of the rock bands The Forminx and Aphrodite's Child; the latter's album 666 (1972) is now recognised as a progressive-psychedelic rock classic. Vangelis first settled in Paris, and gained initial recognition for his scores to the Frederic Rossif animal documentaries L'Apocalypse des Animaux, La Fete sauvage, and Opera sauvage. He also released his first solo albums during this time, and performed as a solo artist. In 1975, Vangelis relocated to London where he built his home recording facility named Nemo Studios and released a series of successful and influential albums for RCA Records, including: Heaven and Hell (1975), Albedo 0.39 (1976), Spiral (1977), and China (1979). From 1979 to 1986, Vangelis performed in a duo with Yes vocalist Jon Anderson, releasing several albums as Jon and Vangelis. He also collaborated with Irene Papas on two albums of Greek traditional and religious songs. Vangelis reached his commercial peak in the 1980s and 1990s. His score for Chariots of Fire (1981) won him an Academy Award for Best Original Score and the film's main theme, "Chariots of Fire - Titles" went to number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, while score for 1492: Conquest of Paradise (1992) was nominated at Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score and the film's soundtrack and main theme topped the European charts selling millions of copies. His compilation albums Themes (1989), Portraits (So Long Ago, So Clear) (1996), and studio album Voices (1995) also sold well at the time. Vangelis composed the official anthem of the 2002 FIFA World Cup held in Korea and Japan. In his last twenty years, Vangelis collaborated with NASA and ESA on music projects Mythodea (1993), Rosetta (2016), and Juno to Jupiter (2021), his 23rd and final studio album. Having had a career in music spanning over 50 years and having composed and performed more than 50 albums, Vangelis is one of the most important figures in the history of electronic music, and modern film music. He used many electronic instruments in a fashion of a "one-man quasi-classical orchestra" composing and performing on the first take. Vangelis died of COVID-19 related heart failure at the age of 79 at a hospital in Paris, France. He was cremated at a simple civil service at The Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, France, where his ashes are interred. March 29, 1951: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: Nuclear Espionage: Soviet Nuclear Espionage: Atomic Spies: Julius and Ethel Rosenberg: The Trial Of Julius And Ethel Rosenberg: -- Ethel and Julius Rosenberg are convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage. Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were American citizens who were convicted of spying on behalf of the Soviet Union. The couple were accused of providing top-secret information about radar, sonar, jet propulsion engines, and valuable nuclear weapon designs; at that time the United States was the only country in the world with nuclear weapons. Convicted of espionage in 1951, they were executed by the federal government of the United States in 1953 in the Sing Sing correctional facility in Ossining, New York. Other convicted co-conspirators were sentenced to prison, including Ethel's brother, David Greenglass (who had made a plea agreement), Harry Gold, and Morton Sobell. Klaus Fuchs, a German scientist working in Los Alamos, was convicted in the United Kingdom. For decades, the Rosenbergs' sons, Michael and Robert Meeropol and many other defenders maintained that Julius and Ethel were innocent of spying on their country and were victims of Cold War paranoia. After the fall of the Soviet Union, much information concerning them was declassified, including a trove of decoded Soviet cables, code-named VENONA, which detailed Julius's role as a courier and recruiter for the Soviets and Ethel's role as an accessory. In 2008 the National Archives of the United States published most of the grand jury testimony related to the prosecution of the Rosenbergs; it revealed that Ethel had not been directly involved in activities, contrary to the charges levied by the government. In 2014, five historians who had published works based on the Rosenberg case wrote that newly available Soviet documents show that Ethel Rosenberg hid money and espionage paraphernalia for Julius, served as an intermediary for communications with his Soviet intelligence contacts, relayed her personal evaluation of individuals whom Julius considered recruiting, and was present at meetings with his sources. They support the assertion that Ethel persuaded her sister-in-law Ruth Greenglass to travel to New Mexico to recruit her husband David Greenglass as a spy. Other historians, though, argue that this evidence demonstrates only that Ethel knew of her husband's activities and chose to keep quiet. The My Lai Massacre was the Vietnam War mass killing of between 347 and 504 unarmed Vietnamese civilians in South Vietnam on March 16, 1968. It was committed by U.S. Army soldiers from Company C, 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 11th Brigade, 23rd (Americal) Infantry Division. Victims included men, women, children, and infants. Some of the women were gang-raped and their bodies mutilated. Twenty-six soldiers were charged with criminal offenses, but only Lieutenant William Calley Jr., a platoon leader in C Company, was convicted. Found guilty of killing 22 villagers, he was originally given a life sentence, but served only three and a half years under house arrest. The massacre, which was later called "the most shocking episode of the Vietnam War", took place in two hamlets of Son My village in Quang Ngai Province. These hamlets were marked on the U.S. Army topographic maps as My Lai and My Khe. The U.S. Army slang name for the hamlets and sub-hamlets in that area was Pinkville, and the carnage was initially referred to as the Pinkville Massacre. On November 12, 1969, independent investigative journalist Seymour Hersh broke the story of the My Lai Massacre, for which he received the 1970 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting. Later, when the U.S. Army started its investigation, the media changed it to the Massacre at Songmy. Currently, the event is referred to as the My Lai Massacre in the United States and called the Son My Massacre in Vietnam. The incident prompted global outrage when it became public knowledge as a result of Hersh's story. The My Lai massacre increased domestic opposition to the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War when the scope of killing and cover-up attempts were exposed. Initially, three U.S. servicemen who had tried to halt the massacre and rescue the hiding civilians were shunned, and even denounced as traitors by several U.S. Congressmen, including Mendel Rivers, Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. Only after thirty years were they recognized and decorated, one posthumously, by the U.S. Army for shielding non-combatants from harm in a war zone. Along with the No Gun Ri massacre in Korea eighteen years earlier, My Lai was one of the largest single massacres of civilians by U.S. forces in the 20th century. March 29, 1973: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Cold War In Asia: The Indochina Wars: The Vietnam War (The Second Indochina War, The Vietnam Conflict, The Resistance War Against America): Aerial Operations And Battles Of The Vietnam War: Operation Barrel Roll: -- On the same day that the last United States combat soldiers withdrew from South Vietnam, Operation Barrel Roll, the nine-year-long covert American bombing campaign in Laos to stop communist infiltration of South Vietnam, ends. Operation Barrel Roll was and interdiction and close air support campaign conducted by the U.S. Air Force 2nd Air Division and U.S. Navy Task Force 77 in the Kingdom of Laos between December 14, 1964 and March 29, 1973 concurrent with the Vietnam War. The operation resulted in a staggering 260 million bombs being dropped on Laos. The original purpose of the operation was to serve as a signal to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) to cease its support for the insurgency then taking place in the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam). This action was taken within Laos due to the location of North Vietnam's expanding logistical corridor known as the Ho Chi Minh Trail (the Truong Son Road to the North Vietnamese), which ran from southwestern North Vietnam, through southeastern Laos, and into South Vietnam. The campaign then centered on the interdiction of that logistical system. Beginning during the same time frame (and expanding throughout the conflict) the operation became increasingly involved in providing close air support missions for Royal Lao Armed Forces, CIA-backed tribal mercenaries, and Thai Volunteer Defense Corps in a covert ground war in northern and northeastern Laos. Barrel Roll and the "Secret Army" attempted to stem an increasing tide of People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) and Pathet Lao offensives. Barrel Roll was one of the most closely held secrets and one of the most unknown components of the American military commitment in Southeast Asia. Due to the ostensible neutrality of Laos, guaranteed by the Geneva Conference of 1954 and 1962, both the U.S. and North Vietnam strove to maintain the secrecy of their operations and only slowly escalated military actions there. As much as both parties would have liked to have publicized their enemy's own alleged violation of the accords, both had more to gain by keeping their own roles quiet. Regardless, by the end of the conflict in 1975, Laos emerged from nine years of war just as devastated as any of the other Asian participants in the Vietnam War. March 29, 1974: Archaelogy (Archeology): Great Discoveries Of Archaeology: Ancient China: The Qin Dynasty: Qin Shi Huang: UNESCO World Heritage Sites (World Heritage Sites): UNESCO World Heritage Sites In China (World Heritage Sites in China): The Mausoleum Of The First Qin Emperor: The Terracotta Army: -- Chinese peasant farmers Yang Zhifa, his five brothers, and neighbour Wang Puzhi, dig a well about a mile east of Mount Li in Lintong County outside the city of Xi'an, inside Shaanxi province in central China, when they accidentlally discover the world's largest funerary pit complex ever discovered. Contained within was The Terracotta Army, a collection of terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, funerary art buried with the emperor in 210-209 BCE with the purpose of protecting him in his afterlife. The figures vary in height according to their roles, the tallest being the generals. The figures include warriors, chariots and horses. Estimates from 2007 were that the three pits containing the Terracotta Army held more than 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses, and 150 cavalry horses, the majority of which remained buried in the pits near Qin Shi Huang's mausoleum. Other terracotta non-military figures were found in other pits, including officials, acrobats, strongmen, and musicians. For centuries, occasional reports had mentioned findings of pieces of terracotta figures and fragments of the Qin necropolis - roofing tiles, bricks and chunks of masonry - but the funerary pit complex was lost to history until this discovery, which prompted Chinese archaeologists, including Zhao Kangmin, to investigate,] revealing this largest pottery figurine group ever found. Since its discovery, a museum complex has been constructed over the complex, with the largest pit being enclosed by a roofed structure. March 29, 1974: The History Of Rocketry: The History Of Spaceflight: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Space Age: The Space Race: The Discovery And Exploration Of The Solar System: Space Probes: Interplanetary Space Probes: The United States Space Program: The Mariner Program: Mariner 10: -- NASA's Mariner 10 robotic space probe becomes the first space probe to reach the planet Mercury at 20:47 UTC at a range of 703 kilometers (437 mi), passing on Mercury's shadow side. The spacecraft flew past Mercury two more times; the second time, after looping once around the Sun while Mercury completed two orbits, Mariner 10 flew by Mercury again on September 21, 1974, at a more distant range of 48,069 kilometers (29,869 mi) below the southern hemisphere; and for the third time on March 16 1975, after having lost roll control of the spacecraft in October 1974, making its closest approach to Mercury at a range of 327 kilometers (203 mi), passing almost over the north pole. With its maneuvering gas just about exhausted, Mariner 10 started another orbit of the Sun. Engineering tests were continued until March 24. 1975, when final depletion of the nitrogen supply was signaled by the onset of an un-programmed pitch turn. Commands were sent immediately to the spacecraft to turn off its transmitter, and radio signals to Earth ceased. Mariner 10 is presumably still orbiting the Sun, although its electronics have probably been damaged by the Sun's radiation. Mariner 10 has not been spotted or tracked from Earth since it stopped transmitting. The only ways it would not be orbiting would be if it had been hit by an asteroid or gravitationally perturbed by a close encounter with a large body. Mariner 10 was launched by NASA on November 3, 1973, to fly by the planets Venusy and Mercury. Mariner 10 was launched approximately two years after Mariner 9 and was the last spacecraft in the Mariner program; although the program called for a Mariner 11 and Mariner 12, they were instead allocated to the Voyager program, and redesignated Voyager 1 and Voyager 2. Its primary mission objectives were 1) to measure Mercury's environment, atmosphere, surface, and body characteristics, and 2) to make similar investigations of Venus. Secondary objectives were to perform experiments in the interplanetary medium and to obtain experience with a dual-planet gravity assist mission. Mariner 10's science team was led by Bruce C. Murray at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. It was launched on November 3, 1973. The spacecraft flew past Mercury three times. The first Mercury encounter took place at 20:47 UT on March 29, 1974, at a range of 437 miles, passing on the shadow side. After looping once around the Sun while Mercury completed two orbits, Mariner 10 flew by Mercury again on September 21, 1974, at a more distant range of 29,869 miles below the southern hemisphere. After losing roll control in October 1974, a third and final encounter, the closest to Mercury, took place on March 16, 1975, at a range of 203 miles, passing almost over the north pole. March 29, 1979: United States Presidential Assassination Attempts And Plots: United States Presidential Assassinations: The Assassination Of John F. Kennedy: Assassinations Of Human Rights Activists: Assassinations Of American Civil Rights Activists: The American Civil Rights Movement: Anti-Black Racism In The United States: The Assassination Of Martin Luther King, Jr.: The United States House Of Representatives Select Committee On Assassinations (HSCA) (The House Select Committee On Assassinations): -- In the U.S. Congress, the House Select Committee on Assassinations released its final report regarding the killings of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. It concluded that the various investigations performed by the U.S. government were faulty because of their insufficient consideration of the possibility of a conspiracy in each case. The Committee in its report also made recommendations for legislative and administrative improvements, including making some assassinations Federal crimes. On the King assassination, the Committee concluded in its report that while King was killed by one rifle shot from James Earl Ray, "there is a likelihood" that it was the result of a conspiracy, and that no U.S. government agency was part of this conspiracy; on the contrary, it was more likely to be between Ray and his brothers. Among their conclusions regarding the Kennedy assassination were: 1) Lee Harvey Oswald fired three shots at Kennedy. The second and third shots Oswald fired struck the President. The third shot he fired killed the President; 2) acoustical evidence establishes a high probability that at least two gunmen fired at the President; 3) Kennedy was probably assassinated as a result of a conspiracy, though the committee was unable to identify the other gunmen or the extent of the conspiracy; 4) neither the Soviet Government, the Cuban Government nor anti-Castro Cuban groups were involved in the assassination of Kennedy, but that the available evidence does not preclude the possibility that individual members of anti-Castro groups may have been involved; 5) the national syndicate of organized crime, as a group, was not involved in the assassination, but that the available evidence does not preclude the possibility that individual members may have been involved; 5) The Secret Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Central Intelligence Agency were not involved in the assassination; 6) Agencies and departments of the U.S. Government performed with varying and often unacceptable degrees of competency in the fulfillment of their duties, resulting in President Kennedy not receiving adequate protection; and 7) Although a thorough and reliable investigation into the responsibility of Lee Harvey Oswald for the assassination was conducted, the investigation into the possibility of conspiracy in the assassination was inadequate, and that though the conclusions of the investigations were arrived at in good faith, those conclusions were presented in a fashion that was too definitive. The Committee further concluded that it was probable that 1) four shots were fired; and 2) the fourth shot came from a second assassin located on the grassy knoll, but missed; the HSCA concluded the existence and location of this alleged fourth shot based an analysis of the contrversial Dallas Police Department Dictabelt recording. The HSCA agreed with the single bullet theory, but concluded that it occurred at a time point during the assassination that differed from any of the several time points the Warren Commission theorized it occurred. The Department of Justice, FBI, CIA, and the Warren Commission were all criticized for not revealing to the Warren Commission information available in 1964, and the Secret Service was deemed deficient in their protection of the President. The HSCA made several accusations of deficiency against the FBI and CIA. The accusations encompassed organizational failures, miscommunication, and a desire to keep certain parts of their operations secret. Furthermore, though the Warren Commission expected these agencies to be forthcoming with any information that would aid their investigation, the FBI and CIA only saw it as their duty to respond to specific requests for information from the commission. However, the HSCA found the FBI and CIA were deficient in performing even that limited role.
